Keeping Your Dog Healthy
As a dog owner you want to do everything you can to make your dogs life long and enjoyable. Below is a short checklist of the most important things your dog will need to lead a happy, healthy life.
For starters you should always keep a large supply of water available for your dog. A dog can become de-hyrated easily after a play session or long walk. Without a fresh water supply your dog is likely to drink from a puddle or ditch which could give them a tummy-ache or lead to worse problems.
Another important factor in keeping your dog healthy is food. All food is not created equal and the variation between cheap dog food and higher quality dog food is large. If you aren't sure which food is right for your dog call your local vet for advice. Dogs need different kinds of food depending on age and breed and your vet will know what is best for your animal. Proper food plays an important role in keeping your dogs weight at the proper level, increasing lifespan, keeping his coat of fur healthy, and even keeping his breath from smelling horrible. If you are looking for cheaper food that is also healthy you should try comparing your local store brand food to the better foods on the market. Buying an off brand, but still high quality, dog food can save you some money while giving your dog the nutrition they need.
One of the most important things you can do for your dog is to take him to the veternarian regularly. Your vet will keep your dogs vaccinations up to date, check for and provide prevention for worms and other diseases, keep your dog's teeth healthy, get rid of and prevent fleas and ticks and offer other advice you need to keep your dog healthy. You will also get a chart showing when your dog will need additional vaccinations. The best way to find a great veterinarian is to ask around. Fellow pet lovers will be happy to recommend a vet you will be happy with.
To help your dog stay in shape you should take some time to help them keep active. Playing in the yard or going for walks will help keep your dog in shape and prevent weight gain that can lead to health problems. Of course playing with your dog is great exercise for you as well so you can enjoy staying healthy with your dog.
Some dogs aren't well acclimated for cold weather and should always be kept indoors during the colder months. If at all possible most dogs will enjoy living indoors even if they can stand the cold. When dogs get bored they are more likely to bark, dig holes, or exibit other behavior that is unwanted. If you must keep your dog outside make sure to provide a good shelter from the rain, wind, heat, snow, ice, and other elements.
If you aren't a breeder it is probably a good idea to have your dog spayed or neutered. This will protect your dog from pregnancy as well as help prevent many other illnesses such as cancer which can prove fatal to your pet. Having your dog spayed or neutered will increase your dogs lifespan and overall health and is a smart thing to do even if you can prevent pregancy by other means.
Finally, you will want to give your dog plenty of love and attention. A happy dog is a healthy dog and being social animals they run, play, and share affection with their owners. Depression in dogs can cause them to have a weaker immune system as well. Enjoy your dog and you will both spend many happy years together.
