Obedience Training For Dogs
Obedience training is useful for dog owners who want to enjoy the company of a well behaved dog. While not always necessary it will create a bond between you and your dog as well as allow your dog to behave in the manner that is expected of him. An obidient dog will be much easier to care for and will help you to avoid problems later on.
The best time to start training a dog is when they are 8 to 10 weeks old. Young dogs learn faster and it's a perfect time to influence how your dog will act in the future. While it is possible to train an older dog you will first have to break them of their bad habits before you can teach them the correct ones.
The most important thing to remember while training your dog is to reward good behavior and either ignoring or correcting bad behavior. Treats make great rewards but it's best to not give them to your dog every time they are obedient. Sometimes this causes dogs to only obey your commands when you are holding treats. Dogs love attention so showing your dog affection for obeying you will often be enough of a reward. Punishing your dog for not obeying can include a light snap of the leash to rattle your dogs collar, giving them a "time-out" in a seperate room for a few minutes, or simply not giving them they attention they desire. You should always approach the dog while correcting them. If you were to call your dog to you to punish them they will associate obeying your command to come with getting punished. Also, make sure to always use the same commands to avoid confusion.
Some dog owners prefer to send their animals to obedience training classes. What some people don't realize is that many of these classes are to teach owners how to train their dogs rather than to train the dogs directly. Even if you send your dog to a school that will train him you will still need to learn the correct commands that have been taught to your dog.
In closing, a trained dog is usually much more enjoyable to be around than an untrained one. A well behaved dog is easier to take care of, safer around other people and pets, and overall more pleasant to be around. If you have an untrained dog you should consider teaching them a few commands as soon as possible.
